Wisdom Teeth Removal

If you have been dealing with persistent discomfort in your jaw or toothaches in the rear of your mouth, the root of your problem may be troublesome wisdom teeth. Here at Beaverton Oral Surgeons our oral surgeons are pros at removing these difficult teeth.

What Are Wisdom Teeth and Why Do You Have Them?

Wisdom teeth are four teeth that are a part of our molars, the broad teeth located in the rear of the mouth that we primarily use for chewing. The third and farthest back set of molars are the wisdom teeth. Because these are the last set of molars to come in, or erupt, they often end up crowding the teeth that are already there. So, if wisdom teeth seem to cause problems so often, why do we have them? Anthropologists believe that wisdom teeth are a throwback to when humans had yet to discover cooked food. Raw food needed to be more thoroughly chewed, hence the extra set of molars.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Have to Be Extracted?

Since wisdom teeth are a prehistoric throwback, they are not well-evolved for today’s mouths. Though many people have no issues when their wisdom teeth erupt, a number of others experience issues like their wisdoms only partially coming in or even damaging their other teeth. This is not just uncomfortable. It can increase your risk for decay and infection because food gets caught in the crowded teeth. You may need to have your wisdom teeth extracted if you are dealing with chronic discomfort in your jaw, gum disease, or tender and swollen gums.

The Best Age For Wisdom Teeth Extraction

The preferred age for removing wisdom teeth is between 18 and 24. However, in some patients wisdom tooth root formation can start late, so they may not need a surgery until in their early 30s. That said people of any age can opt for wisdom tooth extraction if they are starting to cause problems.

What to Expect When Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted

Getting your wisdom teeth extracted is actually a pretty simple, straightforward affair. Before the procedure, we will explain all of your options when it comes to local anesthesia or different sedation options. The procedure should not take long, our oral surgeons can usually have the teeth removed in less than an hour. It is recommended that you have a friend or family member drive you home following the procedure. If possible, you should also take a day or two off from work to give your mouth time to heal. There are also risks to keeping your wisdom teeth.

Recovering From an Extraction

Every single extraction is different, so following the removal of your wisdom teeth, we will give you specific instructions on how to improve your healing process. Everyone should keep a few important tips in mind though. For the first couple of days afterward, avoid hot, crunchy, and spicy foods. Instead, stick to soft and cold foods - this is your chance to eat ice cream without a dentist recommending against it!

Remove Your Discomfort

If you are suffering from chronic discomfort and other oral health conditions, it may be because of wisdom teeth that have failed to fully erupt or are disturbing neighboring teeth. Luckily here at Beaverton Oral Surgeons we make getting your wisdom teeth extracted easy and quick. So give us a call at (971) 249-8370 and find out how we can help you!
